Moore's Law Rescuscitated by New Intel Chip Tech

Intel and IBM have independently developed new ways to make transistors, keeping Moore's Law going for at least two more generations of chips—down to 22 nm. Both methods involve new insulators made out of hafnium, which can be made thicker to reduce current leakage without reducing the electric charge.

If you want to skip to why you should care, basically it means faster chips that run cooler and consume less power. (Think more cores—lots of 'em—and mobile devices.) It also means that Intel maintains a nine-month lead over everybody else, with their chips made with the new tech dropping later this year, while IBM's don't roll out til '08.

P.S. Neither article is written very clearly, so I recommend reading both of them.

Blazing Wireless: How's About 6Gb Per Second?

We always want to show you the world's strongest, biggest and fastest, and now researchers have created the world's fastest wireless link, cramming over 6Gb per second through a point-to-point wireless link. This speedy wireless trick was demoed last month by CSIRO, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, which is Australia's national science agency.

Jeez, that's fast. Just think, at that rate, it will only take Time Warner about .02 seconds to throttle my Internet connection. But wait. It gets even faster!

The CSIRO researchers say this just the beginning, where soon they'll achieve wireless links that are twice as fast. They say their transmission technique yields the highest efficiency ever achieved, and they hope to use the technology in place of fiber optic cables over rivers, across valleys or through congested urban environments.

Figuring that a 6Gb/sec link can download an entire DVD's worth of video in six seconds, this kind of speed could come in handy. Can you spell H-D-T-V?

Menor Adaptador BlueTooth

Newton Peripherals, makers of those sweet MoGo mice that fit inside your PC card slots, have now come out with the tiniest of tiny bluetooth adapters. The idea here is that it's so small and smooth that you can just leave it plugged into your computer all the time. And if my three and a half year old laptop didn't have bluetooth, I'd be all over this lil' guy. Look for them around June for $49.

We've heard tell of the Wild Charge system that replenishes power in cellphones, PSPs, notebooks and iPods, and now we can confirm: It really works.

We played with the system for a while tonight, putting the special cases on cellphones and attachments on iPods, and then suddenly those devices begin charging as soon as you place them on the metallic strip.

How the heck does this thing work?

It uses non-inductive technology to pass the current from strip to device without all that falderal you usually have to go through to charge it.
The company says we'll be seeing the first charging strips for sale in March, and the larger laptop-sized charger will be shipping in June. This is the real deal, folks—get your $49 ready, and that includes one "enablement case." Additional cases are $10 - $20, depending on the device.

Projetor de Vídeo Para IPod

Viewsonic is showing off a projector that tries to separate itself from the rest of the pack by incorporating an iPod dock. The PJ258D, which should hit stores on January 15 for a cool $999, isn't going to win any "my resolution is bigger than your resolution" contests as it only goes up to 1024x768. Viewsonic must be banking on the fact that people will be using the projector exclusively for iPod video, which isn't exactly the best video quality to begin with. We like the iPod integration, but for around the same price you can go all the way up to 720p. A for effort, Viewsonic.

A Samsung anunciou o lançamento de uma TV que recebe sinal de uma central A/V por Wireless

Samsung has announced the details of their upcoming HP-T5894W 58-inch plasma HDTV, notable for the fact that it wirelessly connects to an A/V center. This lets you mount it up on the wall without having to worry about drilling holes and running cables to keep things nice and pretty. We've heard about a similar TV from Samsung, with the notable difference being the previous one came loaded with a built-in hard drive for recording shows. Either that's a separate model that'll come out alongside this one or they dropped the hard drive and changed the name. We'll see

In any case, this one's got 1080p resolution, a very nice 10,000:1 contrast ratio, and 3 HDMI 1.3 ports. The TV connects to the A/V center via a 802.11n connection at 150Mbps and a 300 foot range, which will allow you to keep your TV in a totally separate room as all your components if you so desire. Not that there's any real reason to do that, but just knowing you can is nice. Look for the HP-T5894W to drop in September for $5,699.

WiFI em São Francisco

EarthLink Inc. and Google Inc. have finalized a four-year deal to provide free wireless Internet service throughout San Francisco after seven months of sometimes-tense negotiations that stalled the city's effort to ensure all its residents, visitors and businesses have easy access to the Web.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom signed off on the contract Friday, but the details still require the approval of the city's Board of Supervisors and Public Utilities Commission.

A five-member panel picked EarthLink and Google Inc. to build the project in April, with the goal of having the system running by the end of 2006. It now appears that the wireless, or Wi-Fi, service won't be available throughout San Francisco until early 2008, although limited access may be available as early as April.

Google launched a free Wi-Fi service in August in its home town of Mountain View, making the 11.5-square-mile city of 72,000 people the largest U.S. community with free Wi-Fi throughout its borders.

Those bragging rights presumably will belong to San Francisco, with a population of roughly 800,000, once its Wi-Fi service is finally up and running.

More than 250 communities nationwide either are preparing or have deployed Wi-Fi services, but most of those include access fees. The list of big cities pursuing major Wi-Fi projects include Philadelphia, Minneapolis and Chicago.

The estimated $14 to $17 million cost of building and maintaining the Wi-Fi system will be shouldered by EarthLink. The Atlanta-based company will try to recoup its investment by charging $21.95 per month to surf the Web at speeds three to four times faster than the free service, which will still be quicker than using a dial-up modem.

Online search leader Google will sell ads to help subsidize the free service. About 3,200 low-income residents will be able to subscribe to the faster Wi-Fi service for $12.95 per month.

San Francisco will get 5 percent of the subscription revenue — a cut estimated to be worth about $300,000 annually. That figures indicates EarthLink expects the Wi-Fi service to generate about $6 million in annual sales.

EarthLink also will pay the city $600,000 for right-of-way access and $40,000 annually to place Wi-Fi equipment on street poles.

The contract contains options that could extend the deal's initial four-year duration by another 12 years.

Newsom began his push for a free Wi-Fi system in 2004, touting his vision as a way to keep San Francisco on the cutting edge of technology while making it more feasible for poor households to get online. San Francisco estimates about 30 percent of its residents don't have Internet access at home.

"This agreement to bring free universal wireless internet access to San Francisco is a critical step in bridging the digital divide that separates too many communities from the enormous benefits of technology," Newsom said.

San Francisco's original timetable for launching the service was delayed as city leaders with EarthLink and Google over privacy concerns, the contract's length and financial arrangements.

EarthLink and Google addressed the privacy concerns by giving users the choice to block the service from tracking their precise location. Google believes the ability to pinpoint a user's location might help the company deliver more useful ads about nearby merchants.

At one point in the talks, Google publicly vented its exasperation with San Francisco's bureaucracy, saying it had far less difficulty gaining approval to build a free Wi-Fi service in Mountain View.

Mesa de Gravação de 4 canais para IPod This is a bit of a head-scratcher, but Belkin has gone to the trouble of building a mixing board that records music onto Gen 5 iPods (those that support video). The TuneStudio is the first four-channel mixer for iPods, claims Belkin (and we're inclined to believe it, since the idea never even occurred to us). It supports 16-bit, 44-kHz audio, and each channel has a three-band equalizer.

Why you'd want to record your next indie music hit onto an easily losable, low-fi handheld with a fragile hard drive instead of onto a nice Mac or PC computer is a mystery. And if you do, make sure your iTunes is set for manual synching, or else it will erase your precious creations whenever you dock the iPod.

Anyway, it's a swank-looking device, judging by Belkin's artist rendering. The TuneStudio goes on sale this summer, for $180.
